杜老师是一名大学语文教师，本来十几年来都兢兢业业地在校教书，过着淡泊的日子。而他往日的好朋友李老师却在十年前毅然决然地辞职了，虽然当初李老师非常想拉着杜老师一起去商品经济的大潮中畅游一番，但当时杜老师就拒绝了。日过境迁，李老师现在成了频频出现在电视中的媒体人物，开讲坛、办刊物，成了文化精英。而杜老师生活如旧。
杜老师终于答应给人做“枪手”，帮人做课题，他的选题是《李白之死》。
杜老师第一次谎称自己生病，向学校请了假，为人赶稿。但是当他写了一夜，写到杜甫听说李白落水而死，写下《梦李白》的诗句时，他的内心产生了纠葛，历史与现实，虚构与真相，他无法理清思绪，无法下笔。凌晨他在疲惫中入睡，但他却接连做了一连串的梦。他梦见了久未谋面的李老师，梦见他一次一次地落水，就像杜甫梦见了李白┅┅

Synopsis：
Mr. Du teaches Chinese in a college conscientiously for over ten years, living a scholarly life with poor salary.
Mr. Li used to be Du’s good friend, and he quit the teacher’s job resolutely ten years ago. Li encouraged Du to quit the job and devote himself to making money in the socialist market economy as well, but Du refused his suggestion and stick to teaching.
Things changed with the passage of time, and Mr. Li is now a television personality while Mr. Du lives the life as before. For money’s sake, Mr. Du agrees that he would be a ghostwriter and his subject is The Death of Li Bai.
For the first time in life, Mr. Du lies to the department and asks for sick leave so as to finish the paper in time. He writes all night, but when he comes to Du Fu’s poem Dreaming of Li Bai, he is so confused that he cannot distinguish history and reality, fiction and fact. He feels too tired to write any more, and finally falls asleep in the wee hours of the morning. He dreams a series of dreams. He dreams of meeting Li whom he hasn’t seen for long. He dreams of Mr. Li falling into water again and again, just like Du Fu dreaming of Li Bai.

这是一部超现实的影片，表现了想像、梦境中虚构的夸张情节，但它仍具有很强的现实意义。用梦境、幻觉等虚幻的情节刻画了主人公内心的真实。正是这种内心的矛盾衍生了所有的梦境和幻觉。所以对梦境的表现与描述是要建立在这种内心纠葛上的。切忌因为对梦中情节的拍摄而丢弃了对矛盾的揭示。
用电影语言来表述中国知识份子的内心藉以表现了中国的诗词和中国的文化的某些特征，是要好好研究，仔细设计的。要像一幅水墨画，平淡中蕴含着起伏。正如影片的名字一样，中国的诗词对结构的要求非常严格，字数、格律都有严格的规定。影片正像是一首小令，在结构设计上要考究，要层次分明，在叙事过程中的几个节点不断重复，情绪在重复中递进。开头与结尾的声音叙事起到呼应的作用。
各段落风格要注意情绪和情节的递进关系。
要把握细节，注意控制节奏，使之生动地刻画人物，反应人物内心世界。

Director’s Statement:
This is a surrealist film which gives full play to imagination, fiction and dream scenes but still carries great relevance to real life. The plots about dreams and hallucinations in this film are the
true manifestations of the leading character’s inner world.Thus the depiction of the dreams should be based on the character’s inner struggle rather than at the expense of revealing such a conflict.
It entails wisdom and skills in using the language of film to reveal the inner world of an intellectual and thus reflects the features of Chinese poems and culture. The film should be like a Chinese ink and wash painting, shrouding ebb and flow in peace.As the name of the film suggests, ancient Chinese were very particular about the structure of poems including the number of Chinese characters as well as the rules and forms. The film is just like a short lyric whose structure is deliberately conceived. The plot proceeds step by step from the beginning to the development, the climax and finally the ending. There are several joint points in the narration, namely the scenes of water surface with which the character’s dreams begin time and time again. What come with the repeated dreams are more and more complicated moods and emotions of the character. The vocal narration in the end echoes that at the beginning of the film.
