Vampires aren't always the bad guys. Bloodsucking Nadja (Löwensohn) is having a tough time. Her father has just passed into the netherworld and her brood of undead relatives aren't getting along. She's also trying to protect her family from mad scientist Dr Van Helsing (a barely recognisable Fonda) who's determined to hunt them down. This idiosyncratic take on the genre is as much concerned with ordinary family dynamics as the absurdity of its characters' demonic existence. The notion of blood-ties takes on a new meaning as the forces of love are pitted against the forces of destruction. But this faintly ludicrous set-up is offset by Almereyda's hip, atmospheric styling. Beautifully filmed around New York's East Village, Nadja is eerily pretty yet the humanity at the heart of its main protagonists prevents it from exhibiting any true horror. And there's a cracking soundtrack from the likes of My Bloody Valentine.
