13岁的乖乖女特蕾西(伊雯·雷切尔·伍德饰)一直是一个家长、同学和老师眼中的好学生，与自己的单身妈妈(霍莉·亨特饰)生活在一起。但是一切都在她13岁这一年，随着进入初中校园发生了改变。

在学校里，艾维(妮基·瑞德饰)是一个绝对的公众女孩。艾维那性感的穿着、酷酷的举止行为使其成为标准的万人迷。特蕾西也被艾维所深深吸引，发现自己真正想要成为的样子就是艾维这样。于是在艾维的带领下，特蕾西来到了一个全新的世界：吸毒、偷窃、非法同居、给自己身上穿孔。这一切，都发生在短短的几周内，特蕾西已经变成了一个充满叛逆的坏女孩。

面对女儿的这一切，特蕾西的妈妈与特蕾西爆发了无法调和的冲突。而在经历了一系列充满戏剧性的变化后，特蕾西也终于长大成人，迈入了人生的新阶段。

在影片开拍前，为培养埃文·蕾切尔·伍德同妮基·瑞德和霍利·亨特的友情和亲情，导演凯瑟琳·哈德威克为三人先后组织了两次通宵派对。

片中很多服装、家具和化妆品都是演员的私有物品。

片中妮基·瑞德的舌钉是真的，而埃文·蕾切尔·伍德的舌钉则是由类似吸盘的东西伪装而成，由于很容易脱落，伍德在影片拍摄期间曾多次意外吞下这种舌钉。

在腹部纹身的场景中，特蕾西说出的"What the fuck did you do"并非是剧本中的台词，当时妮基·瑞德用针刺痛了埃文·蕾切尔·伍德，甚至后来还留下了伤疤。

除了少数场景之外，影片几乎全用手持摄影机拍摄而成。

本片是瓦妮莎·安妮·哈金斯的电影处女作。
