若干年前，约翰·卡梅隆·米切尔和词曲作者斯蒂芬·特拉斯克共同构思了一出名为《Hedwig And The Angry Inch》的音乐剧，一个关于东德变性摇滚歌手在美国闯荡并寻找真爱的故事。最初他们仅在纽约的一个摇滚乐酒吧里进行表演，没想到它竟然出人意料地受欢迎。几个月之后，米切尔和特拉斯克终于得以在外百老汇的舞台上演他们的创作，该剧赢得了评论家和观众的一致好评，成为外百老汇有史以来最成功的歌舞剧之一，并在世界各地巡回演出。
