798 is a factory that the East German assistant to construct in the 1950s.
A large number of workers were laid off because of China’s reform and opening up and modernization. At the same time, 798 plants were like the weeds in the sunset, sleeping in the silence.
Just at the beginning of the new century, 798 has become a remarkable but controversial art park since the entry of Contemporary Art. Government involvement, business management, fashion focus and tourists everywhere, like the colorful flower which covered our eyes and make us cannot see things clearly.
Who changed 798 from a factory into an art district? With the rise and fall, glorious and shame of 798, what changes have taken place of those people? In the cracks between art expression, political constraints, commercial temptations and disorder management, is the spirit of contemporary art still there?
798 is a miniature of Chinese culture today like the ancient painting “Along the River During the Qing Ming Festival”.
Will there be another stop after the bus of Chinese contemporary art passed the Summer Palace, Dongcun, Songzhuang and 798?
