Director’s Statement:
In the 1970s, Reform and Opening began.
In the early days of Reform and opening, Hong Kong and Guangzhou represented two worlds. The first was colony, tinged with the energy of capitalism, while the second was a huge, imposing mainland city, but beneath the surface the two cities shared a great deal. Linked to Guangzhou by language and blood, many of the most successful and influential Hong Kongers came from Guangzhou, stealing secretly across the border. Families on both sides of the border remain linked. When these transplanted Hong Kongers returned to see their families, they brought back a vast array of things: elegant new clothing styles, modern applicances, and coveted tapes of pop music. It was in the luggage of relatives that Hong Kong's pop culture came to the mainland. As the mainland struggled with the turbulance of economic opening, Hong Kong pop culture swept in to fill the artistic gaps left by upheaval in China. China's first real modern pop culture was carried by hand from Hong Kong to Guangzhou, and from there it spread out to captivate the rest of the country.
I grew up in Guangzhou and I've been here all my life. And in the 1980s, when I was discovering what path I wanted to take in my life, it was unexpected arrival of Hong Kong pop that shaped me most, and left an impression on me that would be impossible to overstate. It is from this simple love of this early music that this documentary springs from. I hope that by moving through the music we can send our regards to days gone by, and to understand better how a whole generation of young people came to explore, for the first time, the world beyond their border.
