La notte/The Night / Michelangelo Antonioni
Its better to wander into this film without knowing too much. The performances are all outstanding but the main credit must be handed to the artist behind it all Michelangelo Antonioni. It would have been quite beautiful to have seen this film when it came out, but even after all these years the themes still resonate as true. I don't want to get into the plot too much, but this film is more about feeling. The friction and differences between husband and wife are explored. Antonioni doesn't for...Il deserto rosso/Red Desert / Michelangelo Antonioni
After a neorealist period (Il grido),Antonioni begins his movies dealing with incommunicability with "l'avventura" in 1960,continues with "la notte" (1961) and "l'eclisse"(1962).This trilogy is in black and white and features Monica Vitti, his favorite actress -although in "la notte" she's only supporting, the main part being played by Jeanne Moreau-. 'IL deserto rosso' is more of the same ;it's even more difficult and austere than the three former movies. It is the first time Antonioni has experi...I tre volti/The Three Faces / Michelangelo Antonioni
Blowup/Blow-Up / Michelangelo Antonioni
Although released in 1966, BLOWUP is remarkably pertinent today, nearly 40 years later. Its theme of reality/illusion, with people seeing or not seeing what they want not to see, is still pertinent in this era of "missing" weapons of mass destruction. Also, the movie's jaded view of a society distracted from reality by random sex, drugs and immediate sensation is still sooooooo true today. The Mod fashions for the photo shoots look bizarre to us now -- but you'll see equally bizarre fashions i...Zabriskie Point/ / Michelangelo Antonioni
This film has a powerful philosophical ending. But that ending has meaning only if you watch the movie from the beginning. Youth alienation in the late 1960's, from the viewpoint of a young man and a young woman, is the obvious theme of "Zabriskie Point". Neither Mark Frechette nor Daria Halprin had much acting experience, a fact that actually enhances the film's message. Having untrained actors conveys a sense of realism, as both players seem emotionally detached from the turmoil around them. ...Professione: reporter/The Passenger / Michelangelo Antonioni
"The Passenger (Professione: reporter)" is a tour de force of visual story telling. While there is more dialog and the plot makes more sense than many other Michelangelo Antonioni films, it first and foremost uses film-making as a medium to tell its story. The camera is always our eye, taking in sweeping panoramas of the North African desert to an architectural tour of European churches and an appreciation of the variegated urban and rural landscapes of Moorish Spain, still showing relics of o...Il mistero di Oberwald/Das Geheimnis von Oberwald / Michelangelo Antonioni
The Mystery of Oberwald is a made of television movie, done in video before being transferred to 35mm. As introduced by Lorenzo Codelli, this movie reunites actress Monica Vitti and director Michelangelo Antonioni since their last collaboration in Red Desert, some 17 years earlier. During this while, Vitti became a fairly successful comedic actress, while Antonioni was like a globetrotter having films made in the UK (Blowup), US (Zabriskie Point) and having a documentary done in China about Chin...Identificazione di una donna/Identification d'une femme / Michelangelo Antonioni
Possibly the most atmospheric film I ever seen, it made a huge impact when I first saw it, and that opinion has never changed. If there is one film that conveys the mystery of life this is it. It is also a highly evocative picture of Italy from the perspective of the upper middle classes in the late Seventies. Crying out for a DVD release as the photography was excellent too on the original film showings.电影导演尼科洛·法拉刚刚离婚,创作上又遇到了危机。他和一个叫马维的女孩交往,有个男人也在追求...Kumbha Mela/ / Michelangelo Antonioni
Boy was I annoyed with Antonioni for suggesting i sit in an art gallery screening for nearly twenty minutes and watch this. It took so much persistance not to walk out on this piece of garbage - i think it pretty much spoiled everybody's time at the screening of Antonioni's shorts that none of us got to enjoy his more beautiful takes on Rome and Sicily. The images of this indian celebration (i was ignorant to what exactly thanks to a lack of narration or title cards or anything - but this is no...12 registi per 12 città/Add content advisory for parents / Alberto Lattuada
Antonioni films great monuments and sights in Rome, ending up at the roof of the Cistene chapel in Vaticano. He films it so beautifully that, at an art gallery screening, you almost forget that this is essentially a tourism film. It is a rare treat to see such beautiful celluloid expended on just sight-seeing. But, having been to Rome, i know the sights really deserve seeing! This is really Antonioni's passion. He probably enjoyed making this much more than he enjoyed making La Notte (which wa...Noto, Mandorli, Vulcano, Stromboli, Carnevale/ / Michelangelo Antonioni
Compared to much of Antonioni's other "documentary" footage, these five grabs are nice and short: maybe less than a minute of footage each, and very sweet, especially if you're a naturophile. Mandorli is exquisite footage of white blossoms in bloom. Vulcano is helicopter shots of a volcano. Stromboli is helicopter shots of some kind of a mountain covered with coal/ash or some such. The piece de resistance, though, which is actually really wonderful - is Carnevale. Antonioni cuts to the same hel...Lo sguardo di Michelangelo/ / Michelangelo Antonioni
"Michelangelo's gaze" is a very strange and interesting little movie. it's 19 minutes long and has no story what so ever. it's just the great director Michelangelo trying to touch and connect with the great artist Michelangelo. in a mysteriously moving way, you get the feeling that this titan of modern cinema is saying goodbye to the world, goodbye to his life. as the only actor in the cast, Antonioni really gazes at himself and at the work he's done through the course of his life. and what was ...Eros/ / Steven Soderbergh
I rather enjoy watching short films. Like short stories, there's seldom room for more than one good idea, so that idea has to be done well--in the hands of a skilled director, this is an opportunity rather than a limitation. Eros is a collection of three such films, ostensibly sharing a similar theme. Wong Kar Wai's "The Hand" is the first film, and is a premiere example of what a short film can achieve. A concise story about a tailor and a high class prostitute, "The Hand" distills the love/lu...
