works), and a panorama of Japanese documentaries by young filmmakers (11
works). Many of the works will have English subtitles and Chinese voice-over
translation.
(1) ==Workshop Student Works (7 titles) ==
Products of a filmmaking workshop in Yamagata held between Oct 2002 to
August 2003. Many of the participants were students, who worked in groups of
three to five members, making documentaries and short fiction. Themes vary,
but all convey a raw energy and youthful naiveness.
Hand in Hand (25 min), Lunch Box (15 min), Knock (50 min), Kyokubushikan (50
min), Beyond Borders (30 min), Because She Cheers Us Up (23 min), Late
Summer Dance (30 min)
(2) ==Workshop coaches (3)==
Five filmmaker/teachers used the carrot and stick to coach the workshop
students and help them finish their documentaries. Three of their films will
be shown here.
Super Documentary Avant-Garde Magic (33 min)
Director Kanai Katsu is a renowned artist known for his fantastical films
and eccentric performances. His _Super Documentary Avant-Garde Magic_ has
been invited to the prestigious competition section of this year's
Oberhausen International Short Film Festival, Germany.
Kaiseki Cuisine (16 min)
Co-directing with Sakurai Atsushi, Kato Itaru takes a wry and sarcastic look
at what the Japanese eat. We don't eat sushi every day!
Kato Itaru is professor at Yamagata's Tohoku University of Art and Design
and is a respected experimental filmmaker. He will be attending his
screening on Monday, April 26.
Dir: Tsuchiya Yutaka

anti-imperial filmmaker! This entertaining and personal 1999 documentary was
invited to Berlin Forum and other major festivals. Director Tsuchiya
