Kanai Katsu
1936年生于神奈川的一个农民家庭。跟随大映东京摄影所的高桥通夫等工作后,成为自由电影导演,并于1968年成立Kanai制片机构。1969年导演处女作《无人列岛》,获尼翁国际电影节大奖。独立制作拍摄了《微笑银河路三部曲》,之后导演了多部电视纪录片和4部电影,包括《梦游》和《时如风逝》。

This piece depicts many kinds of communication and emotional exchange that happen through hands. Main focuses are three episodes related to hands, including hands applying acupressure, hands with bitten fingertips, and hands that have taken care of the elderly for many years.
Lunch Box

After persistent searching, the filmmakers found a fixed point for filming and observation in a dining booth of a family restaurant. We hear conversations from the various restaurant booths as the camera moves. They are all different. The work presents real-life scenes from a public diner, a place that is usually seen as very artificial and uniform.
Knock

The work is about men punching each other on the streets and in parks. These men want to express themselves through a physical experience--a reality with the pain of the fist--just to confirm they are truly living. As we see how serious they get as the filming continues, we are drawn into the realistic feeling of attending a live match.

Focusing on the traditional summertime obon dance in the village where grandma and grandpa live, Late Summer Dance juxtaposes folklore and stories told by villagers and shows the limitless charm of the dance passed from generation to generation in the village.

Kanai Katsu
Born in Kanagawa Prefecture to a farming family in 1936. After working under Takahashi Michio and others at the Daiei Tokyo film studio, became a freelance film director and established Kanai Productions in 1968. In 1969 premiered his directorial debut, Deserted Island, which was awarded the grand prize at the Nyon International Film Festival. Independently produced and screened Smiling Milky Way Trilogy. Since then, has directed television documentary programs and made four films, including Dream Runs and Time Blows Like the Wind.
Super Documentary Avant-Garde Magic

Visual artist Kanai Katsu documents the everyday life of his alter ego, Kanai Katsumaru. Depressed by his loss of vitality, the elderly Katsumaru trains himself to conquer youth and performs various miracles using homemade "avant-garde magic." These miracles are not just sleight of hand, so be sure to watch closely.

Has been involved with numerous creative projects, including independent FM stations and installations.
Kaiseki Cuisine

This collaboration with Kyoto-based visual artist Sakurai Atsushi focuses on "food." Sakurai obsessively examines the vast quantity of food additives that pass through our bodies everyday, and Kato dissects the richness and poverty of the bento box lunches sold at convenience stores.

Tsuchiya Yutaka
Born in 1966. Began professional work in 1990. Has independently distributed the uncopyrighted video Without Television since 1994. In 1998 began Video Act!, a project distributing independent activist video works, and focuses on expanding a network of media activists. Main works include What Do You Think about the War Responsibility of Emperor Hirohito?, Ryoko 21 Years Old, and The New God.
The New God

A real-life collaboration between a nationalist punk band and a leftwing activist. As a teenager, Karin had problems finding a meaning to her existence in society and repeatedly attempted suicide. It was the philosophy of the ultra right-wing nationalists that saved her. She and her ÒcomradeÓ Ito put together a band and started playing nationalist punk music. Left-wing filmmaker Tsuchiya, an unbending anti-imperialist, decides to give Karin a video camera to shoot herself and her daily life, and starts up a peculiar three-way relationship with the couple. Camera on board, Karin travels to North Korea and meets former Red Army terrorists who fled from Japan aboard a hijacked plane thirty years ago.

Kanai Katsu
1936年生于神奈川的一个农民家庭。跟随大映东京摄影所的高桥通夫等工作后,成为自由电影导演,并于1968年成立Kanai制片机构。1969年导演处女作《无人列岛》,获尼翁国际电影节大奖。独立制作拍摄了《微笑银河路三部曲》,之后导演了多部电视纪录片和4部电影,包括《梦游》和《时如风逝》。

After persistent searching, the filmmakers found a fixed point for filming and observation in a dining booth of a family restaurant. We hear conversations from the various restaurant booths as the camera moves. They are all different. The work presents real-life scenes from a public diner, a place that is usually seen as very artificial and uniform.

The work is about men punching each other on the streets and in parks. These men want to express themselves through a physical experience--a reality with the pain of the fist--just to confirm they are truly living. As we see how serious they get as the filming continues, we are drawn into the realistic feeling of attending a live match.

Kanai Katsu
Born in Kanagawa Prefecture to a farming family in 1936. After working under Takahashi Michio and others at the Daiei Tokyo film studio, became a freelance film director and established Kanai Productions in 1968. In 1969 premiered his directorial debut, Deserted Island, which was awarded the grand prize at the Nyon International Film Festival. Independently produced and screened Smiling Milky Way Trilogy. Since then, has directed television documentary programs and made four films, including Dream Runs and Time Blows Like the Wind.
Super Documentary Avant-Garde Magic

Visual artist Kanai Katsu documents the everyday life of his alter ego, Kanai Katsumaru. Depressed by his loss of vitality, the elderly Katsumaru trains himself to conquer youth and performs various miracles using homemade "avant-garde magic." These miracles are not just sleight of hand, so be sure to watch closely.

Has been involved with numerous creative projects, including independent FM stations and installations.
Kaiseki Cuisine

This collaboration with Kyoto-based visual artist Sakurai Atsushi focuses on "food." Sakurai obsessively examines the vast quantity of food additives that pass through our bodies everyday, and Kato dissects the richness and poverty of the bento box lunches sold at convenience stores.

Born in 1966. Began professional work in 1990. Has independently distributed the uncopyrighted video Without Television since 1994. In 1998 began Video Act!, a project distributing independent activist video works, and focuses on expanding a network of media activists. Main works include What Do You Think about the War Responsibility of Emperor Hirohito?
The New God

A real-life collaboration between a nationalist punk band and a leftwing activist. As a teenager, Karin had problems finding a meaning to her existence in society and repeatedly attempted suicide. It was the philosophy of the ultra right-wing nationalists that saved her. She and her ÒcomradeÓ Ito put together a band and started playing nationalist punk music. Left-wing filmmaker Tsuchiya, an unbending anti-imperialist, decides to give Karin a video camera to shoot herself and her daily life, and starts up a peculiar three-way relationship with the couple. Camera on board, Karin travels to North Korea and meets former Red Army terrorists who fled from Japan aboard a hijacked plane thirty years ago.

SCREENING SCHEDULE: at end of message
The upcoming DIAF 2004 will present a program of documentaries and art films
by young Japanese filmmakers and their tutors. First screened at the
National Cultural Festival 2003 in Yamagata, Japan, it is composed of works
by three groups: Workshop student works (7 works), Workshop tutors' works (3
works), and a panorama of Japanese documentaries by young filmmakers (11
works). Many of the works will have English subtitles and Chinese voice-over
translation.
(1) ==Workshop Student Works (7 titles) ==
Products of a filmmaking workshop in Yamagata held between Oct 2002 to
August 2003. Many of the participants were students, who worked in groups of
three to five members, making documentaries and short fiction. Themes vary,
but all convey a raw energy and youthful naiveness.

Super Documentary Avant-Garde Magic (33 min)
Director Kanai Katsu is a renowned artist known for his fantastical films
and eccentric performances. His _Super Documentary Avant-Garde Magic_ has
been invited to the prestigious competition section of this year's
Oberhausen International Short Film Festival, Germany.
Kaiseki Cuisine (16 min)
Co-directing with Sakurai Atsushi, Kato Itaru takes a wry and sarcastic look
at what the Japanese eat. We don't eat sushi every day!
Kato Itaru is professor at Yamagata's Tohoku University of Art and Design
and is a respected experimental filmmaker. He will be attending his
screening on Monday, April 26.

The New God (99 min)
A real-life collaboration between a nationalist punk band singer and an
anti-imperial filmmaker! This entertaining and personal 1999 documentary was
invited to Berlin Forum and other major festivals. Director Tsuchiya
Yutaka is one of Japan's most innovative emerging filmmakers in digital
video. His latest feature PEEP TV SHOW just won the FIPRESCI prize at
Rotterdam Film Festival this year.

A variety of visual works by mostly young filmmakers in their 20s and early
30s are selected here, representing the wide range of filmmaking activities
