The Chinese title refers to the existence of never ending banquets in the world. Among the main characters in Beijing Beerism, Gozi is a forty something novelist with fame but no market share. Ahjian is a poet over fifty, once jailed for his participation in democratic movements. Xiao Bai is a thirty something not yet published writer, loves to brag about his triad experiences. Zi Pen, a TV producer in his twenties, came from provinces to Beijing to study and work. Zhang Chi, another famous writer… The film consists of their never ending banquets and various drinking games thereof; along the way we know of their personal particulars, changes in friendship and love life, and the demise of the humble restaurant they frequent. These people struggle to hold on to something and be true to themselves, as seen in Beijing Beerism. But in no time the bricks at the bottom of their drinking table and the tiles on the roof overhead start to tremble and give in. Living this life, Gozi asks himself, “We shall disappear into this century en masse, hand in hand, heap on heap, and in carousal. We shall think no more, for we shall be unable to think, we dare not to think… What shall we leave behind? If there is a god, will he leave us untouched?” Zhang Chi asks the others, “Demise is a path back to nature. Our sentimentality toward demise is nothing but delusion. It is a self-serving sentimentality. But what value is there in our sentimentality?” Beijing Beerism is about the fate of Chinese commoners living in a fast changing society exclusively geared toward development. They assert themselves in drinking, which is less decadent than glorious. On drinking, Ahjian says, “Each of us hands down a piece of health here, this little piece of health we don’t want it anymore…” Beijing Beerists are not angry, but beyond anger; they are in a remorseless confrontation with the materialistic society.
