Asian Short Film & Video Competition
Regulations
1. Organization of the Festival
1) The official name of the Festival is Women’s Film Festival in Seoul (WFFIS) and it is held in Seoul in April every year.
2) WFFIS is presented by WFFIS Executive Committee and Feminist Artist Network. The 8th WFFIS will be held for 9 days from April 6 to 14, 2006.
2. Objectives
1) To discover and support talented women filmmakers.
2) To create a network of Asian women filmmakers.
3) To promote feminist filmmaking in Asia,
3. Pre-Selection Entry Requirements
1) WFFIS presents any type of film and video (fiction, documentary, animation, experimental).
2) The director of the film or video must be female who has the Asian nationality.
3) Film must be completed after January 1, 2005.
4) Film formats and video systems are as follows :
- Film : 35mm, 16mm
- Video : Digital betacam, Analog betacam, 6mm digital (NTSC only)
5) Films and videos must not exceed 60 minutes in length.
4. Prizes
1) The following prizes shall be attributed:
- Grand Prize:
A Cash award of 5,000,000 won (approx. USD 4,800) and the Festival's trophy to the best short film or video
- First Prize:
Two cash awards of 3,000,000 won (approx. USD 2,900) and the Festival's trophy each to the outstanding short films or videos.
- People’s Choice Award
The Festival's trophy to the short film or video chosen by the audience.
2) Grand Prize and First Prize are selected by the festival jury and People’s Choice Award is selected by audience during the festival.
5. Rights and Responsibilities of the Applicants
1) The applicants of pre-selection must submit all the documents and materials listed below by 13th January, 2006
- Fully completed entry form
- VHS video cassette or DVD for preview (English subtitled, and the preview copy should be same as the presenting version in festival)
- Synopsis
- Director’s biography & filmography
All the submitted documents and materials will not be returned unless the applicant requires the Festival to return them.

2) The copyright (the right of screening, distribution and world sales) of the film and video is attributed to the applicant
3) During the festival, all the films and videos must not be screened at other places except the festival theater.
6. Rights and Responsibilities of WFFIS
1) The WFFIS Executive Committee is empowered to execute Asian Short Film & Video Competition and select the films and videos for the competition in pre-selection.
2)The WFFIS Executive Committee is responsible to announce the list of the selected films and videos for the competition 30 days before the beginning of the festival.
3)In case the original prints or videos are lost or damaged, WFFIS Executive Committee will be liable for it.
4)WFFIS is entitled to use selected films and videos (less than 3 minutes in length) for the promotional purposes.
5)WFFIS will not use the donated preview tapes for commercial purpose.
6) The WFFIS Executive Committee is empowered to decide all the matters not covered by the regulations.
7. Jury
1) The WFFIS Executive Committee organizes the Jury in the Pre-Selection composed of two or three members and the Jury in the Competition composed of five members including the Jury of the Pre-Selection and the President.
2) The Jury of the Competition is responsible for fair and impartial competition and has the right to confer Grand prize and First prizes.
3) The deadline of the Pre-Selection is 60 days before the opening day of the Festival. The films or videos whose VHS preview tapes have not been received before the deadline of the Pre-Selection will be considered as non-selected.
4) The result of the Pre-Selection will be announced 30 days before the opening day of the Festival through media and homepage of the Festival. The result of the Competition will be announced at the closing ceremony.
5) The films and videos advised of the withdrawal of the exhibition by the Jury will be considered as non-selected.
8. Shipment of Prints and Videocassettes (for selected finalists)
1) The print or video selected for the Competition must be arrived in the Festival Office before 17th March 2006.
2) The print or video selected for the Competition must have English subtitle.
3)WFFIS will be responsible for the round-way shipping cost only in the case where the shipment has been made through the official courier service designated by the festival.
4)In case the print/video cassette is shipped to or from other festivals, the festival will follow the existing custom of cost sharing. Considering domestic prints/video cassettes, the festival will be responsible for the domestic shipping cost only.
5)Prints/video cassette will be returned to the address indicated in the entry form within 2 weeks after the closing of the festival. In case the print should be returned to a different address, the print/video cassette provider must inform the festival about the return address and date by sending a shipping instruction invoice by no later than March 24, 2006.
6)All matters of transporting not covered by the regulation will be managed by the Executive Committee.
9. Agreement
1)The above regulations take effect with the submission of the completed entry form signed by the applicant.

We are glad to inform you that the 8th Women's Film Festival in Seoul (WFFIS) will be held from 6th to 14th April in 2006. Since it's inception in 1997, WFFIS has contributed to building a network in Asian film industry and now it has become one of major international women's film festivals. Also WFFIS has contributed to Filmmaking in Asia by introducing films made about and by women with female points of view. WFFIS has received a lot of media attention as the bustling crowds of deeply supportive audience members. As well as introducing films, it has tried to discover and support talented women filmmakers through its competition section, the "Asian Short Film & Video Competition."
Films presented in the previous festivals include; When Night is Falling by Patricia Rozema, History Lessons by Barbara Hammer, The Day I Became a Woman by Marziyeh Meshkini, Naked by Doris Dörie, Carolina by Marleen Gorris, Anatomy of Hell by Catherine Breillat, Tomorrow We Move by Chantal Akerman, and Yes by Sally Potter.
As a special program, "Special Retrospective on Agnès Varda" at the 3rd festival, "Focus on Tahmineh Milani" at the 4th festival, and “Focus on Léa Pool” at the 5th festival were presented. At the 6th festival held in 2004, we introduced the films of Magarethe von Trotta, included The German Sisters, Rosa Luxemburg and Rosenstrasse. Especially, at 7th festival we organized the international forum regarding the sex trafficking in Asia presenting powerful documentaries such as Tales of Night Fairies and Born into Brothels.
At 7th Festival, we screened 86 films from more than 20 different countries, attracting more than 33,000 audiences and recording over 91% occupancy rate.
Program
1) New Currents - it introduces recently produced, outstanding films by women filmmakers from around the world for special recognition.
2) Korean Cinema: Suggests new approach to the Korean Cinema
3) African Cinema: it introduces the life of women and great women filmmakers in Africa
4) Director in Focus - it illuminates one female director's films
5) Feminist Film & Video Activism - it vitalizes the visual media movement in various women's communities building a broad network crossing the national and ethnic boundaries and differences among women
6) Feminist Newsreel and Documentary Pioneers: Introduces the feminist movement of 60-70’s
7) Asian Short Film & Video Competition - as the competitive section of various type of films/videos within sixty minutes length, it aims to discover and support the emerging Asian women filmmakers.
