Why and How? The first ISSFF was supposed to hold in August, but is now postponed; a competition unit was supposed to be set in ISSFF, but is now canceled. The reasons for the two changes are far from optimistic: On the one hand, the necessity of holding a film festival for students is questionable; on the other hand, the qualities of student films are yet to be improved in general, therefore, are inappropriate for inter-comparison — the two reasons affect and confirm one another. The ISSFF is initially conceived as a way to enrich the education system of Li Xianting's Film Fund — Li Xianting's Film School plus student film festival. Therefore, the standards of film selection for ISSFF were defined as “originality”, “uniqueness”, and “profound reflection to self and the surroundings”. Our film selection personnel watched hundreds and thousands of student films, trying to pick out the works which suit these principles. Astonishingly, through the selection process, the qualified student films altogether last only 50 minutes, including a 30 minutes' documentary, which comes from Hong Kong! The reality. Then alright, we admitted our defeat, and added “encourage appropriately” as a fourth standards. Finally, the free entry unit managed to collect films with a total length of 110 minutes. As a consequence, a few marginal units have been gained upper hands, at least seen from their increased numbers of showing: three shows of short student films from Li Xianting's Film School, School of Film and Television with Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, and Department of Filmmaking with Taipei National University of the Arts; one show of Japanese university student films. The festival will also hold an additionally screening: a full-length student film, No Camera But Shoot. But what's next? We are unable to answer this question, or, to predict a future for Li Xianting's Film School. Anyway, the first ISSFF will be soon a past. Will the future works satisfy our initial principles? Unable to answer yet, of course. “Utopia” refers to an existence which does not exist. In this sense, film education in China is very much like a Utopian dream. “Try to make possible changes”, we say. But who could be the subject? The students, the government, or the group of us in Songzhuang? Unable to answer, still.
原本,首屆ISSFF計劃在8月舉辦的,但推遲了;本來,ISSFF有競賽單元的,但取消了。這兩件事都比較煩惱,卻一點都不甜蜜,因為釀成的原因都是不樂觀的:第一個原因可簡述為辦學生影展似乎沒足夠的必要。第二個可概述為學生片整體水準偏低,也不適合做相互的比較。——兩個煩惱互為因果,同時相互印證。
創立ISSFF的初衷是豐富LXT電影基金的教育體系:LXT電影學校+學生影展。既然ISSFF負有教育的方針,那麼好,被反復討論的選片標準就有了:原創性、獨特性,對自我、環境或者他人有所觸覺和思考。秉著如此原則,選委們看啊看,挑啊挑。。。結果是:在沒任何爭論的情況下,基本符合標準的片子總長不滿50分鐘。。。而其中還包括一部30 分鐘的紀錄片,並且那部片來自香港!為甚麼會這樣?——這個問題,還是挺容易推測出答案的:現狀如此,呵呵。好吧。。。我們認輸。。。於是在標準裡加上了“適當鼓勵”。。。最終,首屆ISSFF的自由報名單元湊夠了一場:大約110分鐘。
那麼好吧,原本的非主體單元變得更主體了一些,至少在場次數量上如此:LXT電影學校、香港演藝學院電影電視學院、國立台北藝術大學電影創作研究所共三場,來自日本幾所大學的學生作品一場,外加一場特別放映的學生長片:《不要攝像機》。
那麼以後該怎麼做呢?這個問題,連答案都推測不出了。如同創辦LXT電影學校一樣,我們同樣無力回答以後會怎樣等等。
那麼這次就這麼著吧,不過今後的作品與我們的標準會更契合一些嗎?——還是無力回答?當然。
烏托邦的意思是不存在的存在,那麼在中國,電影教育的意思也差不多如此了。——盡可能嘗試改變吧。。。主語是誰呢?學生們嗎?偉大祖國嗎?在宋莊的我們嗎?。。。還真不清楚,無法回答。。。
