People have said that holding a film festival is but a simple thing. I think this is correct. Practically every day there are a number of festivals being held all over the world, all at the same time. Taken all together, every year the number of festivals around the world is about equal to the number of of films. But, looking at at the festivals in our vicinity, it is always exhausting and hard, with so much suffering and complaining over so many troubles. Why is this? Is this just a "Chinese characteristic?"
Film festivals need to resolve two problems: first, the selection of what kind of films, and second, how to show these films. Of course, there is also much peripheral work, including how to attract an audience and how to do related promotional work such as investment symposiums, film funding meets, etc.
Regarding our film festival, we have already made the decision as to what kind of films will be included inside our festival catalogue. The change this year is that we've added and emphasized two important categories: animation and experimental film. We hope that directors and audiences will pay close attention to and discuss these changes. As for how to show films, that is not really a complicated question. Whats more, we presently have no need - and also lack the proper conditions - to engage in greater publicity beyond the audience in the theater. So if the film festival is still poorly organized, then there is clearly something wrong with us.
Five years marks a small phase in the life of a film festival and this year is BiFF's fifth. BiFF is a testimony to the work of the hosting organization, the Li Xianting Film Fund. Of course this work hasn't all been a glorious road, and it reflects all our problems, setbacks, efforts, and achievements. No matter if it is glorious or not, it presents all of the hard work that we as a group of cineasts have put forth.

水至清則無魚，至濁則易朽臭，
至清至濁都稱不上是正常的水。
良性的循環可以讓水系煥發出多重的效應：
灌溉、養殖、觀賞、航行。。。濯我纓、濯我足。。。
北京獨立影展如一小溝水，
這溝水淌到了今年，夾雜著四季的雨雪冰霜、兩岸的冷暖炎涼。
只要一直流淌著便是好水，便是滄浪之水，
這溝水裡有草、有魚，好像還有蝌蚪。

The Beijing Independent Film Festival is like a small ditch of water.
The water has dripped down to now, mixing with the four seasons
rain, snow, ice, frost,
and both banks have gone through the mercury's rise and fall.
有人說，辦個電影節其實是簡單不過的事情。我想這麼說是對的。幾乎每天在世界上都有好幾個電影節在同時舉行。算起來， 每年全球電影節的數量似乎跟電影數量都不相上下了。不過，看看我們周圍的電影節，怎麼卻總是這麼吃力，艱難，有很多很 多的苦水，要抱怨很多很多難處。這是爲什麽呢？難道也是因為中國特色麼？
電影節需要解決兩個問題，首先是選擇什麼樣的電影，其次是怎麼放映這些電影。當然，還有許多外圍的工作，包括如何吸引 觀眾，如何做一些相關的促進工作類似電影投資洽談會，電影基金會，等等。
對於我們的電影節來說，選擇什麽樣的電影在電影節畫冊裏面已經有了。今年的變化是我們增加和強調了兩個重點單元：動畫 和實驗。希望導演和觀眾們都來關注和討論下這方面的變化。怎麼放映也並不是一個複雜的問題。另外，除了觀眾，我們目前 似乎沒有必要也沒有條件再去做更多的外部的事情。那麼，如果一個影展還辦不好，那是不是我們本身的問題呢？
5年似乎是一個電影節的一個小段落。BiFF到今年是5年了。BiFF是主辦機構栗憲庭電影基金的工作的見證這一。當然這個見證 並不是就是光榮歷程，而是它伴隨著我們所有的問題，挫折，努力和成果，以及不管是否榮耀，都是我們作為一群電影工作者 努力的呈現。
